Summary
Grid is a new technology broadening possibilities of current Internet which allows not only file exchange but computer resource as well (processor time, disk space), to provide assess to particular equipment. Basis of the Grid technology is unification of resources by creation new type computer infrastructure providing global integration of informative and computing resources on the basis of networking technology and customized software of intermediate level (between basis and application software) and standard services to provide reliable shared access to geographically distributed informative and computing resources (single computers, clusters, information storages and networks).
Description
Grid-technology development was specified by the follow
conditions:
– need to resolvemplex scientific, industrial, engineering and business
problems;
– rash development of transport medium network and technology of high speed
data transfer;
– computing power availability in many organizations (supercomputer or, more
usually, personal computer arranged as clusters).
Main directions of Grid-infrastructure use:
- effective use regulation of resource for small task, with utilization of
computer resource which are temporary not in use;
- distributed computing, extra large tasks solutions which require huge
processor storage budgets, memory, etc.;
- calculation involving large volume of geographically dispersed data, for
example, in meteorology, astronomy, high-energy physics;
- workgroup computing with simultaneous participation of users from different
organization.
Grid-infrastructure provides organization, maintenance and performance of the
following tasks:
1. Link organization in different modes;
2. Information service providing delivery of information on the status of Grid-
infrastructure itself;
3. Infrastructure flexibility;
4. Safety;
5. Resource management;
Use of the Grid-infrastructure provides integrate sources, storages and data
sources (Fig. 1).

Development and implementation of Grid-systems has strategic
character. In the near-term prospect, the technology will enable crucially new
computing device for high technology development in various spheres of human
activity.
Use of Grid-technology can provide new approach to processing of huge volume
experimental data, to provide modeling of the most difficult processes,
visualization of large samples of date, complicated computer-intensive business
application.
Integration technology of computer and storage resources are used to aggregate
large volume of resources for cooperative and as a result economical use:
– possibility to provide large scale and prompt service of a wide range of
users;
– reliability, since with the help of virtualization mechanism data
replication and use of alternative resources may be performed.
