The collection of berry plant forms and sorts of cowberry family is the basis for their preservation and domestication, it opens a prospect for selecting work on development of a new sorts of higher productivity, such worth-while berry-field as blueberry, cowberry and cranberry.

Description

The collection of berry plant forms and sorts of cowberry family of the Institute of Wood occupies a floor space of 3.5 ha and comprises 15 sorts of tall-growing blueberry (Vaccinium corumbosum L.), 12 sorts of American cranberry (Oxycoccus macrocarpus Ait. Pers.), 2 sorts of ordinary cowberry (Vaccinium vitia-idaea L.) , and 7 forms of paludous blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum L.) as well.

Technical advantages and economic benefits

The cowberry genetic diversity presented in the collection offers an opportunity for selecting work, using sorts and forms acclimatized to the conditions of the south-eastern part of Belarus. The sample units on forms and sorts, presented in the berry plant collection, allow using it as breed shed by an initiation of experiment-industrial plantation.

Practical experience

The collection was used as the source of seed piece for establishment of the experiment-industrial plantation of American cranberry of State Forestry-Based Institution “Rechitsa Experiment Forestry Enterprise”, and for creation of the breed shed in the manufacture of seed piece of tall-growing blueberry and cowberry of sort Coral in State Forestry-Based Institution “Krupki Forestry Enterprise” as well.
