Description
Biogeochemical regionalization of neighboring Russian and Belarusterritories affected by the catastrophe at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in order to create specialized GIS to assess and reduce the risk of endemic diseases of the thyroid gland due to geochemical impact factors.[br][/br]A method for creating of assessment and forecast maps of biogeochemical zoning and risk maps for the occurrence of geochemical diseases has been developed. A GIS-technology that allows solving the problem of integrated assessment of the combined effect of factors of natural and technogenic genesis has been developed. For the first time for the entire territory of Belarus a medium-sized iodine deficiency map and a risk map of provoked thyroid cancer were constructed. An original database has been created and the map for estimating the parameters of the "iodine impact" has been significantly refined.

Technology Benefits
For the first time spatial features of iodine deficiency in Belarus have been identified, and not only an updated map of the "iodine strike" has been created, but the risk map of origin of thyroid cancer has been constructed. An ecology-geochemical zoning of the affected areas has been carried out with zones of minimal and maximum risk. Such[br][/br]an approach was before unknown in the literature.[br][/br]

The developed approaches are interesting since they make considerably simplify the solution of many problems of monitoring and prevention of endemic diseases in zones of intensive anthropogenic impact.
