Description
A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute of NAS of Belarus evolve energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies and equipment as well as vacuum plasma chemical methods of functional coatings deposition.[br][/br][br][/br]Antibacterial properties of surfaces are decreases due to the bacteria biofilms formation. The biofilm protects the strain and significantly reduces the efficiency of antibiotics. Preventing the bacterial colonization of biomedical surfaces is the key to limiting the spread of infections.[br][/br][br][/br]The formation of antibacterial coatings on the implants surfaces is an effective way to prevent the implant-associated infections. The thin films can impart desired surface antibacterial functions without affecting bulk mechanical properties.[br][/br][br][/br]There are three major strategies for designing antibacterial coatings: bacteria repelling and antiadhesive films, bioactive coatings with antibacterial properties and composite coatings delivering antimicrobials. [br][/br][br][/br]The use of composite polymer-polymer coatings containing an antibacterial component allows expend of a local drug release strategy. The ratio of the water-soluble polymer to the insoluble polymer matrix allows the control of the release of the antibacterial components which blocks biofilms formation. For drug components can include antibiotics, antifungal components and (or) metals nanoparticles (Ag, Cu) which are effective for drugs resistant bacteria. Stable against dissolution polymer matrix comprises polyurethane (PU), polyvinylchloride (PVC) also improve mechanical properties (coefficient of friction, abrasive resistance), PLA poly(L-lacticacid) is water and biodegradable polymer.
